find useful. There will be the English word, the Lakota word or words and the
pronunciation. Sometimes there will be more than one word listed in Lakota. This
is because Lakota was not a written language until fairly recently and when it
started to be written down it changed along the way in places. At the end of the
19th century the old men are on record as saying that the young
people no longer understood them. It is also fairly certain that words were
changed within groups before this time meaning that one band may have a
different word for a thing than another band.
